Planning the planting calendar
Sequence species by how they handle residual heat. Hardy structural stock such as Ghaf (Prosopis cineraria), Ziziphus and Washingtonia palms can go in from late September as nights begin to cool. Hold tender colour such as Ixora, Plumeria and Adenium until true winter from November, when transplant shock is at its lowest.
Flowering shrubs that carry a scheme through the cooler months reward an early October planting. Bougainvillea, Tecoma stans, Caesalpinia and Leucophyllum will build toward a full display by year end. Ground cover and low-water turf alternatives establish fastest across this same window, so bring them forward rather than leaving them to spring.
Reserve semi-mature specimens earliest of all. A field-grown Ficus nitida or a clear-trunk palm cannot be conjured in a week. It must be lifted, root-balled and hardened weeks ahead of delivery, and that lead time is the first thing to disappear once the season opens.
Pair the calendar with the ground. Even in the ideal window, planting into unamended saline soil undoes the advantage of good timing. Confirm soil tests, drainage and irrigation commissioning against each planting date, so stock meets a bed that is ready to receive it rather than one still being built.
